Kicks for Cancer Raises $30K!

2008 Tournament

The weekend of August 8th, 9th and 10th marked the 10th Annual “Kicks For Cancer” soccer tournament benefitting the Brampton/Caledon unit of the Canadian Cancer Society.

The rainy weather didn’t stop over 225 enthusiastic participants from Brampton and around the GTA from coming out to compete and give back. The tournament, held on the same weekend every year, has become a key fund raising event where the community comes together annually. That’s coupled with the high level and quality of the soccer over the 3 day charity tournament.

The tournament was another huge success. The organizers were happy to say that they, with the help of everyone involved, raised 30K for the Canadian Cancer Society. That’s the most ever in a single year of the 3 day event. “Kicks for Cancer” surpassed the 100K mark last year, and has now given over a $130, 000 to the Canadian Cancer Society in less than 10 years.

This year’s tournament witnessed a Celtic F.C. sweep, with Celtic winning on both the men’s and women’s side.

In an exciting semi final Sunday the Celtic women beat Georgetown in the semis, and The United Black Devils beat Orange Crush in the other semi to go through to the final. Celtic took the upper hand in the final cruising to victory with a 6-0 win. Kayla Moreno of Celtic won the golden boot on the women’s side, and Silvia Batista of Celtic was named the game MVP.

On the men’s side Celtic beat Acroturn in one semi, and Calomino beat Brampton F.C. in the other semi to set up a highly anticipated final between the 2 undefeated sides.

In a highly competitive final, the game was deadlocked at 1-1 after regulation time. With extra time not deciding a winner the game went into penalty kicks. Celtic emerged on the winning side 3-1 in penalties with some help from their goalkeeper. Carlo Del Giudice of Calomino won the golden boot for most goals in the tournament, and Celtic goalkeeper Andrew Pierpoint won the MVP in the men’s final for some big saves in penalties.

Top pledge earners were (in order) Tim O’Leary, Zoe Warner, Trevor Havlin, Margalida Aguilar, Janine Branch, Chris Booth, Nancy Rojas, Anna Rupoli, Anne Robinson and Danielle Cory.

The organizers would like to thank all the referee’s and volunteers who give up their own time over the weekend to help. Special thanks to all the corporate sponsors including: Biomet, TJM Medical, Sapphire Technologies, Cardinal Meats, JV Driver, Rowland Investments & Insurance, The Powerade Centre, Sutherland & Associates, Acroturn and The City of Brampton.
